THE INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS
QUALITY REHABILITATION ACTIVITIES AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR PERSONS WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITIES
The ICRC Physical Rehabilitation Programme (PRP) has been working for 40 years in countries affected by armed conflicts and other situations of violence to provide access to assistive products and rehabilitation services for people with physical disabilities. To meet these needs, the humanitarian institution has made rehabilitation devices more readily available by developing and propagating low-cost, high quality components for prosthetics and orthotics. This technology has become a standard in low- and middle-income countries and is being used by many institutions and organizations. As a result, service users have eased access to affordable and quality assistive devices. Over the past decades, the ICRC has invested a significant budget in R&D and industrial tools to have these products manufactured and commercialised by a swiss industrial partner. Following the successful research and development of the new dynamic prosthetic foot made in collaboration with the EPFL, the ICRC decided to launch a new working model in collaboration with a swiss-based foundation, alfaset, located in La Chaux-de-Fonds (Neuchâtel). From this new working model was born Rehab’Impulse, which aims to offer and develop high-quality components at accessible prices for people with disabilities in all regions of the world, enabling them to develop their full potential in the long term.
